Dear subscriber,

We're almost half way through the year and the holiday season beckons. And the travelling just seems to get ever more complicated. Between ash clouds, rail works, road works, freak weather and no-go zones it's surprising any of us venture outside!  We hope, in a very small way, we're busy making some journeys just a little bit easier. At the airport, station, restaurant, theatre, supermarket and shopping centre our lift installations are helping human traffic circulate. When you have luggage, children and a journey to make a little help goes a long way...

Kind regards,

Alastair Stannah

Up and Down at the Junction

Up and Down at the Junction

It’s Europe’s busiest station with more than 180 trains per hour and over 430,000 passengers a day using 17 platforms. No wonder Clapham Junction was a priority for easier accessibility.

Now the historic station, first opened in 1863, has been the focus of the government-funded ‘Access for All’ programme, managed by the Department for Transport. Delivered by Network Rail, the programme aims to ensure that all travellers (including people with disabilities, young children or heavy luggage) have step-free access to this hub of the rail network.

Stannah’s Major Projects Team, led by Operations Manager Ken Price and in partnership with main contractor Osborne, have completed the challenging installation of nine passenger lifts, where previously there were none.

Ken Price of Stannah takes up the story:

Helping students unwind in Lincoln College

Helping students unwind in Lincoln College

Downtime is a crucial aspect of academia and the recent installation of a Stannah Stairiser CR (curved rail) wheelchair platform lift in Lincoln College in the heart of Oxford has ensured that students of all mobility levels can access a range of leisure facilities.

Located outside in the 19th-century Grove Quad, the Stairiser CR brings full access from ground level to the basement student bar and games area with television, daily newspapers and seating. In action since November 2010, the lift navigates a concrete-and-stone staircase with a 90o turn, and folds flush against the smooth operating rail when not in use. This leaves the maximum width of the stairway available for pedestrians.

Reaching the right note for the Royal Opera

The spectacular new workshop where magnificent sets and scenery for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, are built also features a Stannah lift.
The 13-person, traction-drive Stannah Xtralift is installed to provide easy access within the office section of the Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop, situated on the High House Production Park in Purfleet, Essex.
The Royal Opera House moved its production workshop to Thurrock as a result of needing to relocate due to the original site being required for the 2012 Olympic Games. The Bob and Tamar Production Workshop overlooks the...

Moving walkways take Lincoln superstore to a new level

Moving walkways take Lincoln superstore to a new level

Sainsbury’s superstore in central Lincoln is a popular shopping destination as it provides everyday essentials and a shopaholic’s paradise all under one roof. Extended and refurbished in 2010 the store maximises retail space with the use of a mezzanine level, growing the whole area to a little under 100,000 sq. metres. Superstore customers can purchase food, homeware, electrical goods, clothing, toys, entertainment and more … in a single shopping trip.
Access to the new level is via two centrally-located Stannah moving walkways that sedately take customers and their shopping trolleys to and from the upper floor.
